Home Schooling

http://schoolsofthought.blogs.cnn.com/2012/10/01/my-view-common-myths-about-home-schooled-kids/?hpt=hp_c2

I just finished reading this article, and my experience has been drastically different than what the author is portraying. Nearly every person I've met that was home schooled is socially awkward to some extent, whether they it was a case of them having a hard time fitting in with peers, or a much harder time resisting pressure from those around them. There are exceptions to every rule, but this article is trying to present the exception as the rule (at least in my experience). I'm not saying that kids should never be home schooled, but I very much agree with one of the comments listed beneath the article, which is that parents should be 100% sure they know what they're doing before removing their child from a regular school setting. Interacting with other people (including individuals you may never get along with) is a key part of growing and learning how to manage yourself in the world.

  1. Sean and I are still in the discussion process of deciding if our children will be home schooled, go to public school or private school. A lot of factors go into it so its good we have a couple years to figure it out. I think she was bias towards home schooling but for obvious reasons. I see a lot of benefits of home schooling.

  2. There are benefits in certain cases. However, any successful human being has to be able to interact with others. That's impossible to avoid in public/private schooling, which is one of several reasons that I'm in favor of such institutions.
